So… We live in a time of tremendous opportunity for humble writers of ebooks, where said ebooks can now occupy virtual shelf space at all kinds of huge online booksellers. As thrilled as I am about that opportunity, I do have some concerns, one of which (which I shall expound upon) prompted me to take action (upon which I shall also expound).
From SW, I can download my own books free and see how terrible they look, but I can’t re-upload a better copy of a particular format. The only option is to try to locate the problem in the Word document (oh ha ha, it is to laugh—WordPerfect has this thing called “reveal codes” so you can remove anything wonky you inadvertently put in, whereas Word puts in wonk all by itself and won’t let you see where it is because it put it there for a reason, dammit) and then re-uploading that, waiting for the conversion, and checking to see if the problems are gone (generally not, when they’re unlocatable code issues). On top of that, when they go from SW to other distributors, they sometimes appear to be converted again on that end, which adds wonk that wasn’t there before, and I can’t do a damn thing about any issues that arise at that point.
I’m just a wee bit of an OCD control freak about certain things, and that one makes me go all Joan Crawford.

Several people have tried to reassure me that readers of ebooks are used to “inconsistent” formatting and have learned to overlook it, but here’s the thing—I don’t think they should have to. I think they have a right to expect every ebook they pay good money for to be cleanly formatted.
Kindle versions of my books on Amazon should be clean. If they’re not, let me know, and I can fix them. Anywhere else… what I’ve seen isn’t up to par, and there’s little to nothing I can do about it (though I’m still trying).
So as an alternative, I am now offering MULTIFORMAT EBOOK BUNDLES!
For the same price you’d pay elsewhere, you can download a .zip file containing .epub, .mobi, .pdf, .rtf, AND .html versions (the combination of which covers every ebook-reading device currently manufactured, as far as I can tell), as well as a readme file and a .jpg of the cover. AT NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE, I’m throwing in the user-friendly flexibility of no DRM, and I GUARANTEE I have personally formatted every single file so they’re not eyesores in their respective desktop versions of reading apps. FURTHERMORE, .epub files pass EpubCheck verification (a requirement of respectable .epub sellers everywhere) with zero tech faults before they make it into the bundle.
IF FOR SOME REASON THE QUALITY REMAINS UNSATISFACTORY (ignorance of an issue on my part, not for lack of trying), you can let me know, and I can fix it and hook you up with the new-and-improved version. BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPY.
So henceforth, the EXCLUSIVE EBOOK BUNDLE will be the first option listed on this site as a purchasing option, it will probably be the first place new releases will be available (by virtue of not having to wait for a third party to process the submission… and maybe a little bit by design), and it will receive special attention during my world-renowned promotional blitzes of up to 3 whole tweets.
How It Works: You click the button. A shopping cart window opens, to which you may add other things if so desire, or you may proceed directly to checkout, which is handled through PayPal for your security and peace of mind. As soon as the transaction clears (pretty much instantly, I’ve heard), you receive an email containing a download link. Download, unzip, transfer to your device of choice if necessary, and enjoy (or not—I haven’t yet attained the power to enforce such a command).
I had just .pdf files available by this method for a while, and there were no reported problems with the process, so it should work as advertised. If not, again, let me know so I can right things with you and rectify the problem so it doesn’t happen again.

High-Five! I cannot begin to tell you how frustrating the formatting thing has become! I’m still liking the basic format of a PDF, but I’m old-school like that. Thank you.

I favor PDF, too, just because there’s so much more control over an attractive presentation. (I want to kiss and hug and marry the setup for Drown because it’s just so darn PRETTY.) Unfortunately, even ereaders than accommodate PDF don’t render it particularly well unless it’s been designed to fit that particular screen size, so it really only works for reading on the computer.
For every other format, about the best that can be done is keep it clean and simple.
