Because Ranty McRantpants is an exhausting state to maintain…
… and because children’s literacy is a good thing any way you slice it:
First Book has launched a campaign to get children in need hooked on reading. Visit www.firstbook.org/whatbook to vote for the state to receive 50,000 new books for the children who need them most.
Voting closes at midnight on September 15, 2008. Results of the national vote—as well as a Top 50 list of books that got readers hooked—will be published here in September.
You can vote once a day. If you don’t feel like divulging your personal deets, the only required field on the form is what state you want to vote for. Take ya two seconds. Cost ya nothing. Help make a new generation of readers. Whaddya say?
(Delaware fans, y’all might want to step up your game because you are dead last as it stands now. Are you seriously going to let rinkydink Rhode Island pwn you?)
UPDATE August 22, 2008: My call to arms has been successful! Delaware has overtaken Rhode Island! WOOT!
UPDATE August 25, 2008: Oh noes! Delaware has fallen from grace! (And no, I’m not in or from or in any way connected to Delaware. I habitually root for the underdog, is all.)
UPDATE August 29, 2008: While I have been fruitlessly voting for Delaware (which remains dead last, incidentally), Florida has slipped from 8th place to 10th.
And isn’t this inherently unfair anyway, in that states with larger populations are OF COURSE going to get more votes? How could Delaware even stand a chance of winning? (Although Rhode Island has managed to pull it together enough to kick Delaware’s sorry butt…)
